MIFF: A Poet

Set in Medellín, Colombia and based on the director's life experience, Oscar, a once-lauded poet, is experiencing a mid-life slump - broke, unemployed and living at home with his ageing mother.

"A Poet" centres on relationships, most notably that of the poet with himself, a stumbling has-been with aspirations for a talented student he mentors. The movie is structured into chapters, beginning with 'Failure'. The script is sharp and the humour dark in this satirical, and at times absurdist, look at the life of an artist and his flawed attempts to keep it together. With all of the downs and downs of the protagonist, his frailty feels real enough to evoke empathy. The lead actor is superb in his role. Word play.
