Set on one of Germany's North Sea islands in the spring of 1945, during the final days of WWII, twelve-year-old Nanning deals with day-to-day hardship while looking forward to the return of his father.

A story of innocence and the dawning of reality for a boy whose life is lived on the edge of the world at the edge of a war. The device of seeing change from a child's perspective works to bring a good-hearted viewpoint to daily struggles without being overly sentimental or losing objectivity. Faces and expressions are used to say more than would be possible with words. There's much captured on the screen that goes beyond the comprehension of the young characters, allowing audiences to appreciate the significance of the tender presentation of a rural society in turmoil.
