Beating Hearts

A star-crossed romance and a mix tape are central elements in a gang crime drama set in 1980s Northern France.

There's a bit too much runtime for this story - the pacing and drama in the first part are gripping, building toward the escalation of violence in the final act, which is ultimately less compelling despite the bloody action. The cinematography of dark upon dark with neon highlights is a pleasure to view: brooding and sullen, yet lifted by glimpses of hope, inevitably sprayed with blood. What is perfectly evoked is the headstrong naivety and passion of first love. What the heart wants.
