Blitz

War History Drama

In 1940, nine-year-old George is determined to return home after his mother sends him to the countryside, away from the catastrophic casualties of the nightly bombing of London during WWII.

The impacts of war on ordinary people are harrowing to watch, particularly when recreated with the realism of this director. "Blitz" is a pointed reminder that while the boys were fighting over there, back at home, and throughout the battles, there was a frightened population maintaining their everyday prejudices and racism. Classism was also alive and not all experiences were equal. There's an interesting glimpse of the bombers and the bombed - while one army drops them, citizens of the other are employed in factories building the same arms for retaliation. Bombs away.
