Drive Back Home

Drama LGBTIQA+

In 1970, at his mother's behest, Weldon, a gruff plumber, drove 1,000 miles to Toronto to bail out his estranged brother Perley, who was jailed for public indecency.

"Drive Back Home" is based on a true story, and it's brought to life on the big screen with prickly characters bonded by family and a mother who wants her son to come home no matter what he has done. The movie is entertaining and rewarding as it highlights attitudinal changes since the recent past. The setting is bleak and austere and magnificently framed by the cinematography. The dialogue is simple and meaningful, with the past coloured in by flashbacks. There's a talisman in the form of a taxidermied pug, bringing humour and serving to highlight the thawing of the brothers' relationship. Home is where our story begins, as well as our destination.
