Head South

In 1979, wearing his Dad's wedding shoes, teenage Angus enters Christchurch's post-punk band scene and starts a band, The Daleks.

Drawn from the life of the writer/director, "Head South" is a limited-budget nostalgic effort that's hard to resist. The secret here is not trying too hard, as the young man finds his way into a grown-up yet unsophisticated world. Audiences can sit back and allow themselves to be charmed by the story. Filled with the uncertainty and angst of adolescence before mobile phones and search engines, a time when the girl behind the counter in the pharmacy was a source of knowing, the film is memorable viewing, even as the music is not.
