I'm Still Here

Drama

A mother is forced to reinvent herself when her family's life is shattered by an act of arbitrary violence during the tightening grip of a military dictatorship in Brazil, 1971

The opening scenes of this film are amazing; the carefree, happy and fun family life on the beach in 70s Rio feels so personal, and the characters so likeable. Thanks to this setup, the impact of what comes afterwards hits heavy. The only real issue here is the length, as everything tends to slow down in the second and third acts. Nonetheless, the stunning emotional development manages to grip the audience with a great force. Still a winner.
