Maria

A biographical drama following the last week of Maria Callas's life in 1970s Paris as she tries to establish if she still has a voice for opera.

The lead actor wholly embodies the diva "Maria" and her quirks as she imperiously directs her staff to move her grand piano to another room and back again. The plot is thin; medication-induced flashbacks are used to colour the singer's background but reveal little of actual interest. The production is easy to watch with opulent sets. More than contrived quips and lush design is needed, while more engaging dialogue might have lifted the action. No curtain call.
