Materialists

A matchmaker at an elite dating firm finds herself torn between a wealthy man who appears to be her perfect match and her ex, a struggling actor who still lives in shared accommodation.

"Materialists" offers a cynical look at a corporate-driven world of matchmaking, where predetermined deal-breakers and non-negotiables are used to weigh up potential partners, leaving little room for love. The movie reflects our shallow pursuit of the ideal date, where the desired age for a match may be as unrealistic as it is immovable. The settings and costumes are sophisticated, living up to the premise of the title. Overall, the production is interesting but uneven; it delivers a lukewarm caution about modern dating and offers a few laughs, but lacks truly memorable dialogue. When did universal truths get so shallow?
