May December is an unsettling psychodrama, drawn with serious performances and using an almost monotone on-screen colour palette. The story is deeply focused on exploring the characters but reveals little about the motives, fulfilment, or future expectations of the central couple. You're left to draw your conclusions, sensational, sinister, or otherwise strange. The pace is heavy, giving a feeling of something being held back, encouraging the audience to anticipate a big reveal only to be disappointed on that front. Keep it in your pantry with the cupcakes.
