Gunnar Sonsteby became the most decorated citizen in Norway for his espionage efforts during the occupation of Oslo by German forces.

"Nr. 24" was the codename of the movie's protagonist. The production is engaging and tense, and the audience knows the characters are participating in a high-stakes game. Without being overly bloody or gory, the heartless horrors of wartime are played out realistically and without question about which side the viewer is meant to be on. The snow-covered mountain scenes are breathtaking, the freezing cold is the right temperature for the plot. The narrative is sequenced around the old man delivering a lecture on the war to his students about his work in the Resistance; this personalisation of the story is powerful. Without freedom, there is no choice but to fight.
