Oh, Canada

A documentary filmmaker is dying and arranges for a couple of his protégés to film him as he demythologises his life, revealing how he evaded the Vietnam draft and fled to Canada.

The camera moves between past and present, not always coherently but more or less sequentially, in a way that recollections might be constructed. The film has a gritty, if patchy, quality as thoughts swirl and the dying man speaks in a confessional tone while his wife watches on at his insistence. Audiences can make their decisions about the protagonist as he grapples with memories and truth, raising interesting observations about what we recollect and what we create. Is absolution found in truths?
