The sophisticated storyline doesn't confuse dreaming with reality, making "Past Lives" a tender but grown-up romance that transcends both time and place. The restraint played out on screen by the actors encourages audiences to hold back their emotional responses until it's barely possible not to let their eyes soften with tears.
