Small Things Like These

Drama History

Christmas in 1985, and Irish coal merchant Bill Furlong is haunted by his discovery of what's happening within the convent walls of his hometown.

It's deceptive how a film with minimal dialogue can be so laden with complexity and meaning in the hands of a talented cast. There isn't a glance or eyebrow movement that's not conveying emotion. Being kind and compassionate to one another is a fundamental Catholic principle, and the incongruity between beliefs and behaviours is central to "Small Things Like These". There isn't a single scene or instant to bring on tears, but the cumulative effect of relentless sanctioned inhumanity will leave your heart heavy and eyes wet. God help us.
