The Black Prince

Drama History

Maharajah Duleep Singh is torn between two worlds, his birthright as King of Punjab and the aristocratic English culture he was raised in.

"The Black Prince" relates a particularly oppressive, but not well known chapter of British colonisation. The production is sumptuous in its settings and details, creating a colourful history lesson. Scenes of brutal bloodshed are included for veracity and provide a balance with the overall tone of majesty. The script is a little underdeveloped; some of the scenes tend to become overwrought, particularly those involving an impassioned dialogue between the son and his mother. Sikh.
