The Friend

Adapted from a book by the same name, a writing professor who enjoys a solitary life suddenly finds herself looking after a Great Dane in her New York apartment after her long-term friend and mentor dies by suicide.

"The Friend" is a film about grief, acceptance, and unexpectedly sharing one's life when bequeathed a huge dog. The story of loss and healing is set among city streets and parks brimming with life, offset by cosy, solitary interiors. The cast all shine, with the best performance being given by the hound, which isn't cute - but rather distant, almost aloof. The canine, like the network of humans left behind, cannot comprehend the loss of the lovable author who left without explanation. Disappointment is at the fore with the discovery of someone close not being exactly the person you thought they were. Sad dog.
