The Holdovers

An unpopular history professor is assigned responsibility for the well-being of the boarding schoolboys unable to go home for the holidays, 'the holdovers'.

The holiday season can be difficult for families but worse again for those without family to share it with. "The Holdovers" explores that particular loneliness. This is a down-to-earth movie that hints at warm conclusions without delivering them. The experience is analogous to reading a novel as chapter after chapter unfolds, building a warm, humanistic story. The runtime stretches as the plot line ambles but that's part of the pleasure, these are ordinary people responding to their situations in ordinary ways.
