The New Boy
Drama History
In the 1940s, a young indigenous boy is thrown into a hessian sack and delivered to a remote orphanage run by two nuns.
"The New Boy" is a stylized telling of a clash of cultures and religion, and the truth in the story is drawn from the writer/director's childhood experiences. The plot is fable told as allegory roiling with religious zeal, a lack of oversight, and a disregard for indigenous rites and customs. Overshadowing issues of what's real and what's been abstracted is the stunning camerawork. The visual elements are rich with detail and colour, and the artistic eye behind the lens is evident. Generational trauma is not new.
