The Stolen Painting
Drama Comedy
Based on a true story, a modern art appraiser is alerted that a painting by Egon Schiele, missing since 1939, has been discovered in the house of a factory worker.
For those of us unfamiliar with the rarified world of art auctions, "The Stolen Painting" offers an intriguing glimpse into what appears to be a duplicitous work environment. The movie is amusing, though feels a little underdeveloped when it touches on some plot elements that are annoyingly unexplored, leaving overlooked possibilities. The pace is enjoyable nonetheless, and the conclusion is satisfying. The subject of the painting is wilted sunflowers, suggesting a theme of alienation and decay. One of the most interesting diversions the film takes is examining how a windfall might change a person, with their friendships and working relationships wilting. Rare art and high stakes.
