Wuthering Heights
Romance Drama
A gothic telling of a tragic romance between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, set in the windswept and brooding Yorkshire moors during the late 18th century.
Readers must put the source novel aside in order to fully enjoy the film "Wuthering Heights". The screen version has compressed the multi-generational saga into a single generation, shedding characters and hundreds of pages. This version of the bleak romance lives up to the imagined darkness and ferocity of the tale, which at its core is one of obsessive cruelty and vengeance. The movie is crafted with an eye for a singular passion and a dose of swooning, thanks to the talented leads. The costumes are sumptuous, even with the bleak and often gory, gritty background, perfectly fitted to this exhausting story of struggle that fails to extinguish its romance. Maybe not the full Brontë, but it will burst a corset or two.
