Hava, Maryam, Ayesha
Drama
In Kabul, three women from different social backgrounds face pregnancy as a problem for not having the support of the partner responsible for the embryo.
Set in a city where a household without a man is described as a pot without a lid, "Hava, Maryam, Ayesha" is an authentic depiction of gender, culture and class. The story is related as three discrete story chapters, each describing one of the titular characters and culminating in a memorable closing scene. Unsurprisingly, the writer and director of this account of gender disadvantage is a woman, and her gaze is intense while focused on simple images. Wonder women.
